Singapore's Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) offers a unique recycling initiative. From April 1, residents can recycle eligible cans and bottles, earning a 10-cent refund via their DBS PayLah! wallets. This digital refund option complements the existing ez-link card method. The scheme encourages recycling, with over 1,000 reverse vending machines islandwide. Consumers pay a 10-cent deposit for drinks, which is refunded upon return. DBS Bank's PayLah! app, accessible to all Singaporeans, simplifies the process. Users scan their personal QR codes at machines, ensuring a seamless experience. The scheme aims to boost recycling rates, targeting 70-80% of bottles and cans returned. However, it's important to note that the current plan doesn't include dispensing 10-cent coins, and the refund process is entirely digital. Community ambassadors will assist residents, especially seniors, in retrieving their deposits. The scheme's success relies on widespread adoption, and DBS PayLah! is Singapore's leading mobile wallet with over three million users. Despite the convenience, the operator BCRS Ltd. chose not to include PayNow as an option due to lower transaction costs for PayLah!, ensuring a cost-effective and accessible refund process.
