Bold claim: Lawrence Okolie weighs in on Wardley vs Dubois after sparring both, and his take adds a new layer to the heavyweight title conversation. And this is the part most people miss: the verdict isn’t just about one punch or one boss moment in the gym—it's about who handles pressure, timing, and the right strategic plan when the spotlight is real.
Two-division world champion Lawrence Okolie shared his thoughts ahead of Fabio Wardley’s showdown with Daniel Dubois for the WBO heavyweight world title, after having sparred with both fighters. Wardley’s rise has been nothing short of inspirational—a white‑collar pathway turned boxing breakthrough that resonates with athletes and fans alike. Since stepping onto the world stage last year, Wardley has surged from behind to stop notable foes Justis Huni and Joseph Parker, earning the WBO Interim heavyweight title and, after Oleksandr Usyk vacated, being elevated to full champion.
Now Wardley faces a stern challenge in his first world-title defense, a voluntary defense against fellow Brit and former heavyweight king Dubois. Okolie, who has shared the ring with both men in training camps, offers a candid assessment: he gives the edge to Dubois because of deeper experience and greater punching power.
“I think that Dubois is going to win because he has a lot more experience at the level and he has beaten better guys,” Okolie told Sky Sports. He adds that if the fighters start trading, Dubois’ superior concussive power could tilt the balance unless Wardley’s speed gives him a window. “If Fabio isn’t significantly quicker than him, Daniel definitely punches harder and is more explosive, so I expect him to hurt Fabio.”
Still, Okolie notes that Wardley isn’t without a path to victory. With the right game plan and trusted guidance from coach Ben Davison, Wardley might craft sequences that disrupt Dubois early and land hard, potentially echoing performances from past bouts. In Okolie’s view, the balance of experience versus speed and timing will shape the outcome, and he leans toward Dubois in this particular matchup.
Wardley-Dubois is set for Saturday, May 9, at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester, marking the sixth heavyweight world-title fight in the city’s history. The card brings high anticipation to a venue that has become a historic stage for the sport, and fans will be keen to see which path to glory unfolds first: Wardley’s relentless rise and tactical improvement or Dubois’ raw power and seasoned pedigree.
