Flights cancelled as travel warnings issued after US-Israeli strikes on Iran (2026)

US-Israeli Airstrikes on Iran Trigger Travel Chaos and Safety Concerns

The recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran have caused widespread disruption in air travel across the Middle East. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Wizz Air have been forced to cancel or divert flights due to safety concerns, affecting thousands of travelers.

The attacks, which targeted sites in Iran, including the capital Tehran, have led to a tense situation in the region. Iran has retaliated with strikes on Israel and other nations hosting US facilities, resulting in civilian casualties. The UK Foreign Office has issued urgent advice to British nationals in the region, urging them to seek shelter immediately.

US President Donald Trump cited the failure to limit Iran's nuclear program and regime change as reasons for the attack. Iranian airspace is currently closed, and international air traffic is being rerouted, causing significant delays and cancellations.

British Airways has canceled flights to Tel Aviv, Bahrain, and Amman, Jordan, until Wednesday. A flight to Doha on Friday was forced to turn back mid-journey, affecting over 200 passengers. Sarah Short, returning from a holiday in Dubai, described the situation as 'volatile' and 'unpredictable'.

Virgin Atlantic canceled a flight to Dubai and warned of potential delays for routes to India, Saudi Arabia, and the Maldives due to rerouting. Wizz Air suspended all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Amman until next Saturday.

Qatar Airways and Emirates also confirmed temporary suspensions of flights to and from their respective capitals, Doha and Dubai. The UK's busiest airport, Heathrow, advised travelers to check with their airlines for updates.

The Foreign Office has advised British nationals in the Gulf states to seek shelter after explosions and air raid sirens were reported in Qatar's capital, Doha. John Henry, a 71-year-old British tourist, described feeling a tremor and seeing people quickly exit a shopping center after an air raid alert.

The UAE and Qatar have intercepted Iranian missiles, and footage shows a US facility in Bahrain being hit. The Foreign Office has urged UK nationals in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Oman to remain vigilant and take shelter if necessary.

The UK government has prioritized the safety of its nationals in the region and will provide consular assistance. The situation remains tense, with ongoing concerns about the impact of the strikes and the potential for further escalation.
